Are you an athlete looking to take your performance to the next level? Then it's crucial to understand acid-base balance. Acidosis can negatively impact both your health and athletic performance. In this article, you will learn how to avoid acidosis and what measures to take to keep your body in equilibrium.

What is Acid-Base Balance?

Acid-base balance refers to the equilibrium between acidic and alkaline substances in your body. Some areas, like the stomach, need to be very acidic (pH 1-3) to function properly, while others, such as the small intestine, are alkaline (pH 8). Blood, on the other hand, maintains a stable pH between 7.35 and 7.45. The body uses various regulatory mechanisms, including breathing and metabolic hormone production, to maintain this balance.

Causes of Acidosis

Acidosis often results from a combination of an unhealthy lifestyle and poor nutrition. Stress, lack of exercise, and a high-protein diet significantly contribute to it. Particularly acid-forming foods like coffee, alcohol, nicotine, sweets, pasta, meat, sausage, and eggs can disrupt the balance.

Symptoms of Acidosis

Acidosis can manifest through various symptoms: increased susceptibility to infections, bad mood, fatigue, nervousness, general discomfort, lack of motivation, weakness, and muscle or joint pain. Long-term, it can even lead to serious illnesses such as high blood pressure, stroke, or heart attack.

Strategies to Avoid Acidosis

Vegetables, Fruits, and Salads

As an athlete, you should incorporate plenty of vegetables, fruits, and salads into your diet. These foods provide essential alkaline minerals and support protein metabolism. Green vegetables like cucumbers or spinach are particularly recommended. Ensure that your plate contains at least twice as much vegetables or fruit as meat. Avoid sugar and white flour, as they provide unfavorable carbohydrates without supplying minerals.

Alkaline Supplements

A balanced diet can be supplemented with alkaline nutritional supplements. Many athletes use a regenerative alkaline bath after intense training sessions, combined with the amino acid L-glutamine, taken in a dose of about 10 grams shortly before the 15-20 minute bath.

Daily Meditation Practice

A daily meditation practice can work wonders. Breathing meditation lowers stress hormone levels and promotes inner peace. Sit or lie down comfortably and breathe deeply for 30 minutes. Let all thoughts pass by like clouds without following them. This practice will help you reduce stress and bring your body into balance.

Acid-Base Test at Home

With special test strips, you can measure the pH of your urine. Record the values over seven consecutive days, four times a day: in the morning before breakfast, before lunch, before dinner, and before bedtime. Ideally, the measured values should fluctuate throughout the day. The pH levels measured in the morning should be between 5.5 and 6.5, while they should occasionally exceed 7 during the rest of the day.
